(9/25/2012) Forecasting is notoriously difficult in all business decisions. Forecasts as basic data to make other important decisions (facility capacity, material procurement, staff scheduling, logistics, warehouse, distribution channels), it is critical to the business' profitability.
In 2005, after Katrina hurricane hit, Walmart shipped almost 2,500 truckloads of merchandise to the Gulf Coast. Their prompt shipment provided more relief to the area in time and often faster than FEMA. Walmart's emergency operation center has done excellent jobs reacting to approaching hurricanes and snowstorms.
(10/4/2012) Amazon's Kindle Paperwhite is so popular that it is sold out in 3 days (launch on 10/1/2012, and news of sold out on 10/3/2012). I would say Amazon chose a good timing for Kindle Paperwhite. Early october to test the water of upcoming shopping season. With two more months to go, I bet Kindle Paperwhite will be one of the hottest holiday gift of 2012.
