Oculus VR Seems to Forgot How They Become Successful

(3/26/2014) This is an exemplary story of modern capitalism. A startup, Oculus VR, just announced that it is sold to Facebook at $2B. If it is a virtual game company starts from private capital, it would be just a regular acquisition. However, Oculus VR "raised more than $2.4 million on Kickstarter in September 2012," and this sale pisses many sponsors off. This is different from a homeless person winning a lottery from passer-by's generosity. It ruins the passion in many people who are willing to help to fulfill a dream. Facebook's Oculus VR may still be successful in the future. However, how will the Oculus founders do to win back people's trust in them?

Lesson learned: Never forget about where we come from!

中文感想:一個受群眾募資而成功的公司,昨天宣布將被FB以20億美元買下,結果是讓那些曾經熱心捐助的人感到背叛。我的結論是,做人(或者是公司作為一個法人)不應該忘本!

In-Game Purchase, Are You the Generous 0.15%?

(2/28/2013) Most of mobile games on Apple's iOS and Android are free. To compensate the game development cost, the gaming companies offer in-game purchases to allow players to pass faster, get tips to receive 'treasures', or get 'one more chance' to defeat the enemy. But, how many of them are paying? Not many, only 0.15% of gamer ever pay for in-game purchase but this part counts around 50% of revenue for those game developers. If you are a game developer, how can you design your game to be business sustainable?

Wii U Is Selling Badly

(1/30/2013) Another example of tough forecasting for style goods. Nintendo Wii U's sales has been 'terrible.' Compared to Sony' PS4 and Microsoft's XBox One, Nintendo's Wii U seems to be out of the game already. After the success of Wii, Nintendo has lost 80% of its market value.

Product Failure

(3/18/2013) How can we say a product is a failure? Is Apple iPhone map a failure? Is Microsoft Vista a failure? or its Surface tablet? Microsoft's hotmail has been transformed for many years, and now it will be eventually merged to outlook. The most recent victim of a failed product is the CEO of Electronic Arts (EA). EA's recent launch of SimCity received an overwhelmingly 1 (out of 5) star review on Amazon (1862 users give 1 star out of 2146 users on 3/18/2013). The major reason: EA totally underestimated the server capacity required from purchased users who choose to play in the "multiplayer online mode" instead of "offline single-user mode." What will be next failed product on this list?

When you play online game, you HATE this message.

I am not a video game and have never played one. But this one looks very interesting. There is a news "The economics of video games" from the Washingtonpost.com.
